Yes! For best results we suggest using your SURFDRY in a well-ventilated, warm and dry room. The drying efficiency and times is affected by the air conditions in the room and thickness of your gear. You can read more about this here. Avoid using the SURFDRY in small rooms with limited ventilation (like a shower cubicle).
SURFDRY is designed to create internal airflow loops. Warm and dry (ambient indoor) fresh air is drawn into the wetsuit (or booties), and that fresh air absorbs moisture from inside the material as it circulates. The time it takes to make a wetsuit dry to the touch depends on many variables. This includes: the environmental conditions of the drying room and the neoprene type, style, size and thickness of wetsuit and even whether a suit has a liner. We aim for dry overnight as this is typically achievable under most indoor conditions.
SURFDRY accelerates and completes gear drying. We've carried out extensive testing using custom build data acquisition equipment and you can see detailed information here. The equipment is accurate to 1 gram of weight and tracks ambient conditions like Temperature and Humidity.
Yes — SURFDRY circulates warm air through the arms, legs, and torso, drying inside and out simultaneously. You’ll never have to turn your suit inside out to complete the drying process again.
SURFDRY is designed to work with every wetsuit and to extend the life of through removing residual moisture. The connection to the wetsuit is designed to minimize stretching on the wrist and ankle seals. Most wetsuit manufacturers warn against hanging wetsuits from the shoulders to avoid stretching, so it's best to fold your wetsuit at the waist for drying.
The most effective way to dry your wetsuit is to fold it in half and attach one SURFDRY unit to a wrist, and the other to an ankle. You can see a diagram here.
Yes. You can use your SURFDRY outside. Weather apps will provide local dew point. We recommend drying out of the sun and as far above the dew point as possible. As outdoor conditions approach the dew point (within 5F), it is recommended to move to a warm, indoor drying location.
SURFDRY Original is optimized for indoor and overnight drying. It is ultra-quiet, providing light airflow and without heat. It uses about 1/1000th the power of a hairdryer. There are similarities in that both have a fan and are intended to remove moisture.
SURFDRY Original is not heated - for overnight, indoor drying it is not necessary to heat the air that enters the wetsuit or booties as long as the drying conditions are suitable.
SURFDRY units are almost silent, in fact some people are not sure they are running based on sound. The fans' spinning is obvious. We used our data acquisition equipment to optimize fan speed and noise for indoor drying.
There's no danger posed by SURFDRY Original - it is running at an extremely low voltage (USB / 5V). Do keep loose hair away from the spinning fan. The fan blades are protected within the housing, however.
SURFDRY is designed for use with wetsuits, booties and gloves. Hooded suits will also benefit from SURFDRY given additional drying action. A separate hood could be dried standalone with a rubber band or similar attaching SURFDRY. SURFDRY may be used in creative ways!
There are two modes: wetsuit and bootie. When you attach the SURFDRY to a bootie the moist air needs to exit to dry. To manage that, the bootie mode opens an outlet which allow moist air to exit SURFDRY adjacent to the main housing. You can see more information on that here.
It has been tested extensively on an array of full wetsuits. Suits with both short arms and short legs may pose a challenge, depdending upon arm and thigh diameters. SURFDRY attaches to nearly any suit ankle or wrist.
Absolutely. SURFDRY uses low, controlled airflow and temperature that won’t damage neoprene or seams. Safe for all major wetsuit brands, from 2mm summer suits to 6mm winter suits.
You can power your SURFDRY via a USB-C wall adapter or portable USB-C battery pack. If you're using a battery pack there are many great options; we recommend one which supports USB-C standard. A 10000mAh (very small) battery pack will power a pair of SURFDRY/ 50 to 70 hours.

The SURFDRY nozzles are specifically designed with a diameter that avoids over-stretching your wetsuit, but keeps them securely in place. The funnel design ensures that the rim of the device sits beyond the seal of your wetsuit, with the seal sitting unstretched at the narrow end of the nozzle. In 15 months of iterative testing, we’ve found no permanent changes to any wetsuits.

Anything damp and hard to dry would be a fit for SURFDRY.
Definitely. SURFDRY is lightweight, compact, and easy to pack. Nesting the units makes it even more compact! Many users take it on surf trips or use it in vans with a portable USB power bank.
Air, like other fluids takes the path of least resistance. We've found often the suit neck becomes the primary exit point. A chip clip or similar used to pinch off neck outlet airflow will force air to exit the opposite wrist from SURFDRY.
In some suits, especially those with inside fur lining, hold tremendous amounts of water. We've found the water laden, heavy material can pinch airflow handicaping drying. Creating a large wrinkle or gather in the material to allow continuous airflow loops enables drying. The same strategy can work at arm and leg attachment points when they pinch. Once you adjust for outlet airflow you accelerate and complete the drying cycle! The method should be repeatable.
A good target temperature is 65F and up for ambient air drying. We're aware of users drying in cool garages, but adjacent to hot water heaters. Others, wait for dripping to cease and bring inside to an indoor bathroom. Others use a small space heater to heat a closet or shed to 65F. If none of those exist, we just might have other products to solve.
No. SURFDRY is manufactured to be a robust, reliable solution and > ten of thousands of hours of drying. It is not designed to be submerged. We recommend letting most or all of the dripping to cease before inserting SURFDRY.
You will observe this as well. Water exits rubber or neoprene around the SURFDRY is on the outside of the unit by way of surface tension. We've thoroughly tested this. In the unlikely event water or moisture enters the device, all components except the fan are sealed to prevent damage. We also did a ton water damage and corrosive testing in a "fan torture chamber" where the highest moisture levels were applied and maintained (imagine a small, sealed chamber with a humidifier). From that testing we decided to apply a specialized coating to the electrical components of the fan to mitigate moisture damage.
There is only one speed for the fan. We optimized it for:
The key difference is for airflow and moisture to exit what you are drying. For a surf bootie, a shoe/boot, a glove/mitten...there is only one opening with a dead end, whereas a wetsuit, pants or a jacket all have multiple openings.
The boot setting opens up exhaust ports and the venting on the end of the nozzles - you can see the orange color inside when it is on the bootie setting - to enable airflow and moisture to exit when there is just one opening and a dead end space, like for a shoe or glove.
The diameter of the SURFDRY nozzles aggressively step down. We suggest when SD is installed in wetsuit wrists or ankles that each is fully seated against the next nozzle or main housing.
The much smaller diameter is intended to keep pressure off the wetsuit ankle and wrist seals, but the larger diameter engages with neoprene above the seal. The units stay in place nicely.

On a very thick wetsuit such as a 6/5 (and the same is true for all wetsuits) ensure that you feel a small amount of exit airflow opposite SURFDRY. If you do not, then find where the suit is either pinched or folded/pressed together inhibiting the airflow.
